5 Things You Should Know Before Majoring in Computer Science

5 Things You Should Know Before Majoring in Computer Science

Before deciding to major in computer science, I think there are some things you should be aware of:
1.) It involves a lot of MATH
MATH MATH MATH MATH MATH!!! If you’re going to major in Computer Science you need to make sure that your math skills are up to par. Computer Science tends to deal with TONS of math. If you’re not ready for this it can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, this major is not just about programming and algorithms.
2.) You won’t have a lot of free time
Computer Science has a very demanding curriculum. Most professors will expect you to have a certain level of knowledge upon entering their class. If you don’t already know some basic principles of programming, I suggest you do a bit of practicing before majoring in Computer Science. If you value the social aspect of college, consider another major.
3.) Expect to Fail a Course or Two
I’m not saying that you are guaranteed to fail a Computer Science course in college. But the likely-hood of you failing a course in this major is significantly higher than courses of other majors. If you do happen to fail a course, don’t be too hard on yourself.
4.) You still need Experience and a decent Portfolio
Don’t think that your Computer Science degree is so valuable that you don’t need anything else. Employers are not exclusively focused GPA’s like many of you are assuming. Instead, they are looking for a student who is ambitious and has experience in the field they want to work in. Yes, Computer Science is a degree that is in great demand and respected in the Tech field. But you should make sure you get an internship while you’re in college for the real world experience.
5.) Little Homework. Lots of Projects.
As a Computer Science Major you won’t have a bunch of reports to write. You won’t have tedious assignments that are meaningless. The homework assignments that you do receive will most likely be small because they are hard and require critical thinking. You will, however, get assigned with tons of Projects throughout out your college career. Be prepared to spend about 3 to 4 weeks at the minimum working on projects.
