5 Benefits of Being a Black in the Tech Industry

5 Benefits of Being a Black in the Tech Industry
Growing up, I was always told that my passion for computers was “too nerdy” or “white people stuff” and that I should pursue something more stereotypical of my race. The thought of working in the Tech world can be very intimidating for minorities who have yet to break into the industry.  But, there are many benefits to being black and working in the tech industry. And although, i’m still a student, I have the privilege knowing a few successful african americans in the tech industry who have shared some of their insight on this topic. Here are 5 benefits of being black in the Tech Industry.

1.) You’re going to STAND OUT
I don’t think I have to tell you that the tech industry is predominately white. In my computer science classes I am often the only black person in the class. African Americans represent approximately 3% of workers in the tech industry. While this may be a bit intimidating to some, this is actually a benefit. People will tend to notice you and your work a lot more than someone who is not black. And the fact that you’re breaking lots of stereotypes by working in this field often gives people a great impression of you.

2.) You will get a JOB faster
Piggybacking off of number 1, by working in the tech industry, you are breaking the mold and venturing into an area that most African Americans find intimidating because they don’t see many people who look like them doing the same thing. Companies are always looking to diversify there employee base. So, if you’re black and applying for the same job as someone who is not black with the same qualifications, you have a higher chance of securing the Job. Companies will fall all over themselves to hire a black programmer
with good credentials.

3.)You will break the STEREOTYPE
As a black person in the tech industry, you will be setting an example for future generations to come. You will be showing that you don’t have to be a rapper, play sports, or break into the entrainment to feel successful.

4.) You will undoubtedly BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS
When working in the Tech Industry, you will be working with people who are culturally different from you. They will most likely all have different backgrounds and posses a different mindset. This is a good thing if you open yourself up to it. This is a chance for you to broaden your horizons and experience things that you’ve never experienced before. You never know what kind of opportunities you will come across by associating with a diverse group of people.

5.) You will gain SUPPORTERS and EXPOSURE because of your race
Lets face it, we live in a world where racism still exists. And sometimes it’s a good idea to use this to your advantage. The media is literally on the hunt for Black Entrepreneurs to create a story about these days. Although others view this as an unfair advantage that we have, I encourage anybody who has a tech start up company or is working on a startup to take advantage of this “unfair” advantage.
